A very good rototool
I've been using an old Harbor Freight Chicago Electric rototool that's about 15 years old and has seen some pretty heavy use. I'd already gone through one shaft and though the replacement was still going strong, I started smelling something electrical during use that wasn't normal. So, I decided to retire it and invest in a new one. I purchased the 560W version (the orange one), opting for the greater power and the metallic rotoshaft instead of the rubberized one I had before. In setting it up, I did notice that the cords were very short compared to the Chicago Electric one, coming in at about a foot shorter. It was too short to directly plug in and replace where I had my previous rototool. I had some spare 1 foot extension cords (the kind used to separate out power chargers on a single power strip), which closed the gap, so I made due. But if you have a distance to go for plugging in, this may not be long enough. Firing it up I was (and am) a bit concerned about the foot pedal. It's a lot bigger, but also a lot less sturdy than the Chicago Electric. But the CE version doesn't have a grounded plug to the new rototool. So I gave it a try (I can always swap out the cords if I get that motivated). The new rototool is actually quieter in operation, and somewhat smoother. I only ran it long enough to ensure that under usual conditions, there wasn't any stutter in the shaft. That's always an indication of insufficient lubrication (for those of you who may have experienced that with these) unless you're bending it at an extreme angle. Some white grease will fix that right up, but be sure to remove the old grease from the shaft cable as best you can before applying new grease. The one thing that made this four, instead of three, stars is that it's a 1/4" chuck. For a rototool, that's huge. It literally opens up all of the accessories that a small power drill has that come with 1/4" shafts. I had bought some roto sanding drums, but they were 1/4" and didn't fit my old one. Now I can use them with a lot more finesse than I could with my hand drill. I was also somewhat surprised by the quality of the accessories that came with it. Typically, they're garbage. These were at least a step up from that, and might actually be useful. And the chuck key having a screwdriver handle and t-bar to tighten the chuck beat the living crap out of the awkward T-bar chuck key I had for the CE roto. Now, one caveat: I haven't had a chance to use it. It's a 50Hz device, operating on 60 Hz. But the voltage is fine and all this means is probably more RPM's. Since you only ever run a rototool as fast as you need, rather than at max speed (unless you enjoy the wonders of friction fires), I don't expect it to be a problem. Once I use it, I will come back and edit the review if anything unusual goes wrong. Otherwise, I'll leave it as is. I will be greasing the cable before I do that, since I don't know how well it's greased (even if I didn't get any stutter in playing with it, and I DID bend it to an extreme degree to find out). So far so good. If it stays that way, that's the my word on it, and I think it's a decent tool for the job. If that changes, I'll let you know.

lots of power but ...
This tool is affordable and powerful, a fine item for the hobbyist or amateur user. It is not suitable for professional or high duty cycle use. The hand piece becomes very hot with extended continuous operation. The hand piece is a jacobs chuck but it is not high quality. It is not precise enough to chuck drill bits finer than about #50 and anything larger than that up to roughly 1/8" is fiddly to get properly aligned. A great improvement would be an optional variable size collet chuck similar to Dremel tool for these fine sizes. Anyone buying this with an eye to drilling fine holes would do well to look around for an adapter that could be fitted to the jacobs chuck to do that. Otherwise, the tool represents a good value.

Very Powerful Rotary Tool
Very good rotary tool with plenty of power. So much so that I would recommend using the 1/4 " bits instead of the 1/8" that it comes with. At least if you will be using it to carve into wood or drill into metal. What I don't like is the short power cord on the foot pedal. It does not reach up to the power outlet on my workbench, I have to put the pedal on a 5 gallon bucket to get it up high enough to plug in a reach the motor cord. I figured out that if I don't need variable speed then just plug the motor directly into the power outlet and use the on/off switch. This runs the motor at full speed which works for most jobs anyway. Also I discovered that the first thing needing done is to remove the rotary shaft from inside the metal sleeve and spray on a light coat of grease. Otherwise it would squeal when applied it to the work. This is an easy task though. I can recommend this tool.

Smooth, powerful, and quiet.
The versatility with the foot pedal, a 1/4" chuck, and having much more power makes a huge difference between this and a dremel type tool. The pedal's ability to start with rpms at a snail's pace makes up for being a bit too sensitive, and rpm can increase rapidly with little input. May be more convenient to use an adjustable knob set-up for long duration use. The chuck takes a lot more key rotation to change diameter than a normal drill, and can be frustrating as it can hang-up on the sharp corners of the handgrip, but can be remedied by filing a chamfer on corners (see pic). That and the fact that upon initial inspection I used the supplied allen wrench to remove flex cable from motor to find no lubrication on inner cable. I added wheel bearing grease to the cable and reinstalled without any issue as well as taking notes to order a new replacement cable in case of eventual failure. I wish I had a tool like this years ago but could only dream of it as the price of over $300 was prohibitive. I'm extremely pleased with it after the file mod and realize that it may have been a safety concern for not having the chamfer from the factory.

Greeat for the price, but there is always something wrong you need to fix
After reading the reviews and then purchasing and installing, I realize that this product has one reoccurring theme as of a flaw. People get the product and there's something wrong with it, whatever it is, mine happened to be that the Chucck didn't come with the key. And then they're happy with the rest of the machine. It's just you have to fix the one problem that's wrong with it.

Nice engraver
Work's great but the power cords and flex shaft tube should be longer.the cord isn't long enough to reach the floor for the pedal, so I need to use an extension cord between the motor to the pedal. If not for that I would've given 5stars. As for the problems people are reporting just grease the ends of the flex cable and tap the pedal a few times and it will start slow with out jumping and is very controllable at low rpms

A little more speed would be nice.
Great to have around for the price. If you are using it to carve you might want a little more power.

Foot pedal is the only weakness in this machine
The foot pedal is kinda flimsy and hard to control speed evenly. Other than that, works great for detail sanding and shaping

Missing key chuck!!!!
Missing key chuck!!!! And the chuck is not as advertised 1/4", it's a 4mm. Now I can't use it, no key. Item is OK for the price, it's working, control speed with the pedal. Shall I wait for the key and a 1/4" chuck ? Advise me.

Very good
Very quiet machine, impressed for the price how well it works. It seems as good as the ones my instructor had in her class.
