Perfect direct replacement for the original carburetor
I have a 1995 riding mower with a Briggs & Stratton V-Twin engine which is well maintained. Not long into the mowing season, the engine began experiencing an alternating surge and hesitation. A process of elimination led to the carburetor as the culprit. I tried just cleaning all the accessible orifices and jets but it did not work. Unable to locate a rebuild kit, I was left with replacement. My original search found a replacement on another site for $200 plus shipping. I then tried Amazon not holding much hope they would have a part for a 23-year-old engine. Not only did Amazon have it but at almost $50 cheaper and free shipping (Prime). The packaging was not the greatest as the box inside was somewhat crushed however the parts were undamaged. It came with all the needed gaskets and a new linkage. Installation relatively simple and was done with basic tools consisting of small socket set, screwdriver and pliers. On my mower the hood and front grill needed to be removed to access the carburetor. The fuel line does not have a shut-off valve from fuel tank so I used small a vice-grip pliers to clamp off the line. An appropriate size phillips screwdriver can also be used to plug the line after disconnecting it from the carburetor. After that, remove the air filter, unbolt the old carburetor and unhook the choke and throttle linkage. The installation was simply the reverse. IMPORTANT; Make sure the air filter is thoroughly free of debris before installing it. This eliminates the risk of any particulates falling into the carburetor during its installation possibly putting you back at square one. Once everything was installed, I verified all the bolts were tight and all the connections were properly made and then tried starting it. The engine cranked a few times as the fuel got into the carburetor, started right up and settled into steady RPMs. I moved the throttle back an forth and the engine responded properly with no hesitation or surging. It has now been three months of mowing every other week and the engine continues to function normally.

I either messed up the rebuild or the old carburetor had some other problem because when I installed the new one the engine star
I had a similar experience as another reviewer. I have a Craftsman 19.5 HP tractor that is over 17 years old. I had carburetor problems - difficult starting, had to run with choke partially open, engine would not restart when hot. I did a lot of online research and found this is a relatively common problem for the older Briggs & Stratton two-cylinder engines. There are many suggestions available, ranging from carburetor rebuild to complete engine rebuild and various other fixes in between. There are many videos on YouTube that address this problem and show solutions. After I rebuilt the original carburetor and replaced the coil, spark plugs, and fuel filter I still had the problem. I have many years of experience as a back yard mechanic but the carburetor just didn't seem right even after the rebuild. I had almost decided to give up and get a new tractor, but decided to try the new carburetor as one last attempt to restore the old faithful tractor. I either messed up the rebuild or the old carburetor had some other problem because when I installed the new one the engine started and ran as good as new. The new one is a direct replacement although it has different part number that supersedes the old one which is no longer available. It appears to be an improved design, with a larger fuel pump and no adjustable needle valve for idle. I researched prices, and although this unit is not cheap, Amazon had the best price and their usual fast delivery. If you have problems with your old Briggs & Stratton engines and have ruled out other causes, I suggest that you save the cost of the rebuild kit, skip the rebuild of the old one and get a new one from Amazon.

Briggs & Stratton 693480 Carburetor
Briggs and Statton 19 1/2 hp motor in a Craftsman 42 inch mower (#917 259 560)... this was the right fix for my surging motor... tried adjusting the air mix carb screw (it would run ok for a while) and tried cleaning the carb, but eventually the surging would always come back, would have to run with the choke pulled out a bit. Only 4 stars b/c the new carb no longer has an air adjustment screw which i feel is helpful. Mowed the lawn 3 times now and it's like new, hopefully it lasts as long as the original (25 years). -Update: 2 years in now, and it's starting to surge a bit, i plan on trying to clean it. -Update: shot some carb cleaner in there and it seems to be running like new again, no surging

Worth the money.
The Amazon price was about $30 or so cheaper than buying local. A Briggs and Stratton certified small engine mechanic told me that non-adjustable carburetors never work well after a rebuild. My past experience with another engine is that cheap Chinese made knock-off carburetors are a waste of money. My 18 HP twin opposed wood chipper engine was starting to have gasoline flow into the cylinder heads and crankcase via the carburetor. The problem could have been the fuel pump, needle valves, or the float. Chances are it was all of the above due to degradation over 15 years of exposure to alcohol in the gasoline. Purchasing a new Briggs and Stratton carburetor was a lot cheaper than buying a new engine due to fuel dilution of the motor oil. The engine now purrs minus the surging of the old carburetor putting too much fuel into the cylinder heads.

Well worth the cost to fix them right.
This new carburetor is the best thing that ever happened to my 23 yr old (1994 yr mfg) Craftsman tractor with the 18.5 twin IC gold engine. It had gotten to the point of almost not starting and then would only run with the choke out about half way. I had cleaned the old carburetor several times to only help the problem for a day or two and then right back to not running right. I broke down and spent the money for the new Carburetor and it installed with no changes at all. Took less than an hour to do the entire job. Cranked up in seconds and is running like new again. I wish I had bought the new carburetor a couple of years earlier to fix it rather than put up with it running poorly all that time. Highly recommended fix to those older B&S engines. WH
